£6.50 - Start at Bank station.
Before the Great Fire of 1666 there were 133 parishes in the City, each with its own parish church. Religion was extremely important to the people who lived and worked in the Square Mile. After the fire eighty eight of these churches had been destroyed. Sir Christopher Wren’s office got the job of rebuilding fifty one of them, as well as Saint Paul’s Cathedral. Wren was almost 80 when the last stone was laid on the great dome. Now there are just over twenty of his churches left and this walk will show you most of them. Please be aware that the tour only covers the church exteriors.

There are over 150 open spaces in the City of London, all cared for and maintained by the Corporation’s own gardening department. Many are hidden away or created from old churchyards. Because the City has it’s own micro-climate due to the heat generated from the buildings and underground railway, it is able to support some exotic species of plant life and trees. These tranquil gardens provide an oasis for City workers away from the traffic and crowded streets. Many have their own history attached as well as some odd features.
